Bill Stone is co-founder and Managing Member of Outside CFO.

Bill is also co-founder and Managing Member of two successful legal services firms, Outside GC, the nation’s largest provider of on-demand general counsel services, and Patent GC, an on-demand provider of intellectual property legal services.

Bill brings significant leadership experience to Outside CFO as an entrepreneur who has helped transform the legal industry by building a model of legal services delivery that both solves the inherent cost and efficiency limitations of traditional legal models and provides a more rewarding professional experience for lawyers.

Bill is also an accomplished business development professional. Before co-founding Outside GC, Bill led an international business development team as VP Business Development for eBT International, Inc., a Nasdaq-traded enterprise software company. Prior to that, Bill served as Vice President Corporate Development and General Counsel for Verde Media, Inc., a venture capital-backed media company in San Francisco. Bill began his legal career as a law clerk in federal district court in Boston, Massachusetts, followed by a successful private practice as Partner in the law firm Tonkon Torp LLP, where he co-founded the firm’s technology practice group, and acted as general counsel to multiple technology, manufacturing, service and retail companies.

Bill is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Tufts University and a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Harvard Law School, where he won the Williston Prize for contract negotiation and drafting.

Bill is a regular guest lecturer on venture capital transactions at Brown University and lectures on negotiation techniques at the University of Rhode Island. Bill serves on the board of directors of the Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theater in Warwick, Rhode Island, where he chairs the Committee on Directors, and on the board of the Bubs Foundation, a charitable organization Bill founded that provides music education opportunities to students in Boston-area public schools. Bill previously served on the board of directors of The Public’s Radio, Rhode Island’s NPR station, where he served as Chair of the Board from 2016-2018. Bill has won election and served on the Town Council of East Greenwich, RI, and he serves on the Endowment Committee of Westminster Unitarian Church in East Greenwich, RI. Finally, Bill is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA), headquartered in London, England.

Bill grew up in Montclair, NJ, where he attended the Montclair Kimberley Academy. Bill is an avid tennis player, a singer in any shower and loves cooking, especially for his wife, Carolyn Mark, and his children, Ben and Teah.
